And the economic data continue to be deeply and terrifyingly horrid. Retail sales [Einzelhandelsumsätze] plunged a record 8.7 percent in March, blowing out the previous record, a 3.7 percent drop in November 2008 during the Great Recession. Pretty much everything fell off a cliff other than grocery shopping driven by virus-fearing hoarders.

Industrial production dropped 5.4 percent, the biggest monthly fall since 1946. New jobless claims number will arrive Thursday morning. They are expected to show another 5 million in new layoffs and furloughs pushing the total to around 22 million in a single month, matching all the jobs created in the last decade. In other words, the economy is in total free fall.

Ich habe versucht, es nachzuvollziehen, nicht ganz einfach. Ich war auch nicht der einzige, für den das nicht ganz einfach war. Hier noch mal in Kurzfassung:

Die Kosten, die für einen Test im Rest der Welt entstehen, hatten wir schon berührt:

Rund 2,50 Euro koste einer seiner Tests, erklärt der Firmeninhaber. Mit Arbeitskosten und dergleichen dürften die Labore eigentlich nicht mehr als zehn Euro verlangen, rechnet er vor. Dass ein Test um die 300 Euro kosten solle, könne er sich nur mit einer ,,riesigen Geldverschwendung" erklären.

Test-Kits für die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO gebe er daher für den halben Preis ab. Und besonders arme Staaten, die ,,in angemessenem Umfang" bei ihm bestellen, belieferte er sogar gratis.

A Texas judge on Friday ruled that all registered voters in the state should be allowed to request and use mail-in ballots due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Der Staatsanwalt macht die regeln nicht, er ist kein policy maker und daher war das was er gesagt hat, totaler Blödsinn, er kann das Wahlrecht nicht einschränken und auch keinen Anzeigen und vor ein Gericht stellen, nur weil es im nicht passt, das die Leute Briefwahl machen. Da das auch nun Gerichtlich auch untermauert wurde, denke ich mal, das der Anwalt zwar versuchen könnte, damit bis zum Supreme Court zu gehen, aber ich glaube die werden das auch ablehnen, da irgendwas zu beschneiden.

Bisher war es üblich, dass amerikanische Medikamentenzulassungen quasi automatisch, wenn auch zeitlich etwas versetzt, für Europa übernommen wurden. Die EMA, die europäische Zulassungsbehörde, wird sich in Zukunft nicht mehr auf die FDA verlassen können. Das amerikanische Jahrhundert geht zu Ende.

Unzureichende FAA-Prüfung

Für die Zulassung der Boeing 737 MAX und ihrer Software war in den USA die Federal Aviaion Agency (FAA) zuständig. Der Untersuchungsausschuss des US Kongresses kam zu dem Schluss, die Prüfung der 737 MAX durch die FAA sei "in grober Weise unzureichend" gewesen. Die Behörde habe "ihre Pflicht bei der Erkennung entscheidender Sicherheitsprobleme nicht erfüllt".

In Europa dürfen nur Flugzeuge starten und landen, die von der europäischen Aufsichtsbehörde, die EASA zugelassen wurden – auch Boeing-Maschinen aus den USA. Hätte man hier nicht auf die Fehler aufmerksam werden müssen? An sich schon, wenn es nicht eine Vereinbarung zwischen beiden Behörden geben würde. Um die Zulassung nicht komplett doppelt zu machen, hat man sich nämlich auf eine Arbeitsteilung geeinigt .Patrick Ky, Executive Director der EASA, beschreibt das Vorgehen folgendermaßen:

"Wir setzen uns mit Boeing und der FAA zusammen und einigen uns über die Themen, bei denen wir selbst bestimmte Tests machen wollen: Bereiche, die unter Sicherheitsaspekten von maßgeblichem Interesse für uns sind, und Bereiche, bei denen wir uns auf die FAA-Zulassung verlassen."
