Zitat"Postmodernism, the school of 'thought' that proclaimed 'There are no truths, only interpretations' has largely played itself out in absurdity, but it has left behind a generation of academics in the humanities disabled by their distrust of the very idea of truth and their disrespect for evidence, settling for 'conversations' in which nobody is wrong and nothing can be confirmed, only asserted with whatever style you can muster."https://www.stevestewartwilliams.com/p/top-10-daniel-dennett-quotes
ZitatWhen running for chairman, Hümmler's slogan was "I want my old GWUP back" (Vyse 2023). This sentiment is now clearly shared by his opponents, who also desire a return to what they perceive as the former status-quo. In an attempt to clarify where the "old GWUP" really stands on this matter, I reached out to Manfred Körkel, Martin Mahner, and Carl Heinz Ross, who founded the organization in 1987 alongside Sarma (Harder 2022). What changes did they notice, and do they think skeptics should investigate critical studies?https://skepticalinquirer.org/exclusive/the-german-dilemma-continues-skepticism-in-the-face-of-ideological-conflict/
"In 2022 it became clear that there are two incompatible ways of thinking in GWUP," Körkel explains. "One that is classically universalistic and one that wants to conform to left-identitarian thinking. Although the left-identitarian school of thought has progressive goals, it contains relativistic, post-truth and anti-enlightenment tendencies that are incompatible with science." Körkel further asserts that critical studies provide the intellectual foundation for a form of activism that penetrates natural science, compelling organizations such as the CFI and GWUP to counter these ideological incursions. Mahner adds, "It is absolutely mandatory that skeptical organizations tackle critical studies, as they are grounded in a toxic identitarian and partly postmodernist ideology that is not only about to destroy the social sciences and humanities from within, but also affecting the natural sciences. This criticism is not primarily about politics but about the 'alternative epistemologies' employed and the question of whether these academic fields follow the proper methodologies of the sciences and humanities." He clarifies, "This is not to say that there are no genuine research questions in critical studies. Discrimination, racism, and gender, for instance, are proper social science topics but they must be studied with proper empirical methodology, not with a certain ideology in mind that shapes or even dictates empirical results, or, worse, rejects scientific methodology altogether." He recommends the paper In Defense of Merit in Science by Abbot et al. (2023) as a resource.
Ross comments, "I am not deeply familiar with critical studies, but my vision for GWUP is to serve as a reliable source of information, especially regarding topics where it is difficult to find scientifically based facts, such as alternative medicine, but also newly emerging areas." Regarding the upcoming election, he expresses concern: "I hope we can avoid splitting into two smaller organizations. Such a division could threaten the survival of our magazine, the skeptic center, and other GWUP achievements. It would essentially destroy decades of work."
