The State Coroner is investigating the death of a Perth woman who died of cancer after refusing traditional medical treatment in favour of alternative therapies.

Inquest into cancer patient's treatment

A woman who chose alternative medicine to treat her cancer was in such pain, her elder sister told an inquest in Perth today, that watching her was "like watching some one being tortured".

Penelope Dingle's older sister Toni Brown said that she had first become aware that her sister was suffering from rectal cancer in August 2003. She said previously Mrs Dingle, who died in August 2005, and her husband Peter had told the family she was suffering from another ailment and was being treated by homeopath Francine Scrayen.

"She seemed to be happy taking this treatment," she said.
